A New Name?

Ok so I think we all agree that we should try to come up with a different name for the show. If you've got ideas just post them, don't worry about if they're stupid. People might think of something else when they read your idea so just keep 'em coming.

Facets are flat faces on geometric shapes. The organization of naturally occurring facets was key to early developments in crystallography, since they reflect the underlying symmetry of the crystal structure. Gemstones commonly have facets cut into them in order to improve their appearance.

The angles used for each facet play a crucial role in the final outcome of a gem.

When Steve was describing the projects he wanted us to develop he suggested
thinking of a mirror (as it relates both to body and measurement in certain ways) and using our nodes to bend the mirror's reflection to see what we want our audience to experience. Facets are used on gems to bend light, they work together to make the light that is inputted into the gem reflect and make it shiny, without the connections of the right angles and cuts the gem would look dull. Facets are like our nodes in the show, they work together to make everything pristine and shiny for presentation.

Facets are also consider windows to a whole new geometric world. They allow you to see the underlying construction of (in our show's case) the networks. They are windows into concepts and theories that the artists present with their pieces. They are a new lease on a material object that may be more than it appears to the naked eye.

I thought these might be good reasons to rename the show something along the lines of FACETS. Gems are a way of measurement in history and even today they represent something priceless and beautiful; it's an abstract measurement system.

Also, when one thinks of imperialism, one may think of wealth and riches and power and gems are associated with all of those concepts. As well, facets are able to represent the nodes of an imperial system, as being a window into a complicated connection of many units and places throughout the imperial world and network.

With all of these possible links to the word, it seems to me that FACETS may be a start to entertaining the idea of a new name for the show.

I think Facets is a great name for a show. What we need to talk about, however, is if it's too much of a jump to Imperial Measures. We should talk tomorrow in Dave's class and discuss our thoughts.

oh I like how the word really related to the projects. awesome thinking Mallory! yeah lets definitely check with Dave and Steve, but I really like it.

so Dave read it over and his comment is that we have a problem with screens...
and facets, being that it is so closely related to windows and mirrors, is not a good way to discourage the use of screens and videos.
I totally agree with him and understand that perspective, but this is definitely a start I think.
Any other thoughts for names or ideas or discussions?

Imperial Measures it is -- right? We've decided not to re-label it?

We've put it out to the rest of the class if they have any ideas they are supposed to email us by Monday.
